On June 12, 2016 the Amalfi Regatta of the Maritime Republics will take place. The sporting event, created in 1955 to commemorate the glories and rivalries of four historical republics, has arrived at its 61st edition, and as well as Amalfi involves Pisa, Venice and Genoa: the other maritime cities that for centuries competed for supremacy in the Mediterranean.

The historical event takes place every year rotating between these cities, and for the 2016 edition Amalfi will be hosting the regatta and the charming historic parade that winds through the streets of the town before the start of the race.

The race is the central moment of the whole event, supported every year by many tourists who cheer on the four teams, each consisting of eight rowers and a coxswain, as well as the reserves, who are ready to challenge for the trophy: a prize in gold and silver, made by Goldsmith School of Florence, that is presented to the winners and which they can keep until the following year. The trophy is of a rowing galleon (as used for the race) supported by four sea horses, which appear below the coat of arms of the four Maritime Republics.

The historic race is two kilometres long, and differs depending on the location: in Amalfi it goes along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in Genoa in the Ligurian Sea in the port basin, in Pisa it is against the current of the Arno and in Venice in the lagoons that are characteristic of the Adriatic sea.

An unmissable opportunity to visit Amalfi and enjoy a unique and rich tradition.
